How to Clean Sofa Fabric

A sofa is the center of your living room and more than just somewhere to sit. Fabric couches tend to accumulate dust, stains, and odors over time. Inspect the Cleaning Code

Prior to starting, find the manufacturer's cleaning code on your sofa label:

W – Clean with water-based cleaners.
S—Clean only with solvent-based cleaners.
WS—Either water- or solvent-based cleaners are okay.
X—Vacuum-only professional cleaning service is advisable.

Vacuum Carefully

Dust, crumbs, pet hair, and other loose particles can be removed by vacuuming with an upholstery attachment. Don't forget to crawl under the cushions and in cracks.

Remove Stains Immediately

For small stains:

Water-based (W/WS): Combine a few drops of mild dish liquid soap with water-based. Moisten a cloth with the mixture and blot—do not rub—the stain.
Solvent-based (S): Use a dry cleaning solvent. Apply with a clean cloth and dab gently.

For tougher stains, use fabric-specific stain removers or have a professional cleaner do it.

Deep Sofa Cleaning

If the upholstery has the W or WS label:

Mix warm water with a small amount of upholstery shampoo or dish soap.
Gently scrub the fabric with a soft brush or cloth.
Don't soak—too much water will ruin the filling or cause water spots.
Blot dry with a towel and allow the sofa to air dry thoroughly.

Neutralize Odors

Sprinkle baking soda on the fabric and allow it to sit for 15–20 minutes before vacuuming it up. For added freshness, use a fabric-safe deodorizer.
